The 20 input Yamaha MG20XU offers a table-top analogue mixer, with a few digital goodies built in. It’s the largest model of the excellent MG series, and offers a total of 16 mic channels – if you want to really get it going with inputs.
Looking at the first 8 channels (all mono), there is a Neutrik COMBI connector, to take either XLR or Jack input. There’s also a 1-knob compressor, as an easy way to bring a microphone or instrument to the fore, by applying as much (or as little) pre-set compression as you’d like.
Following the channel down, there’s 3-band eq with sweep-able midrange, three Aux sends (for stage monitor sends, or in-ears), an internal SPX effects send, pan knob, and a fader. You also get the choice of sending the signal to the Stereo (FOH) bus, or firstly either to Group 1-2, or 3-4 bus, which is handy if you’re grouping vocals (or drums) together for easy volume control of a group.
The next four mono-only channels can each be used for microphones or line inputs, with the only difference between these and channels 1-8 being the absence of the yellow ‘1-knob compressor’ knob.
Channel 13/14 and 15/16 offer mono XLR input (mic) or stereo jack inputs (line), but simple 3-way EQ only (no swept mid). The last two channels you can use with XLR (microphone) inputs, or choose RCA for Ch 17/18, and RCA/USB input for 19/20.
As far as compact, analogue consoles go, MG20XU packs a huge array of features into a compact package. Oh, and check inside the box… the rack mount kit is included!
