Small enough to fit almost anywhere, Zoom F6 Recorder has delivered the future of field recording…in 2019.
Of course, the fact that F6 has got six (6) high quality mic preamps, a sophisticated AutoMix function to help reduce ambient sound, and the tiny footprint of 100mm x 120mm x 63mm (and just 520g) should all be right up the top of everyone’s interest piquing lists.
So too should the multi-powering options of Sony® L-Series battery, (or) 4 x AA batteries (alkaline, lithium or rechargeable NiMH batteries)… (or) or AC adapter : DC 5V (supports USB bus power).
However, the biggest rave around F6 has been about the 32-bit float recording. With dual A/D converters to capture both explosive and subtle sounds at full audio quality (without ever adjusting gain), F6 allows you to focus on “just” getting the microphones in the right spot, rather than needing to also account for unexpected audio peaks.
Let’s be clear. F6 won’t make you ‘better’ at field recording, nor will it help you with wireless mic drop outs or noisy airconditioning in an otherwise quiet environment. It won’t help with the quality of your shotgun microphones, and it certainly won’t help your post production mix leap out of the speakers with never-before-heard ideas.
What F6 will definitely give you, however, is a faithful representation of everhthing you’ve captured – without fear of either too little or too much gain. Oh, and it’s tiny!
