This is not a transformer inside an XLR barrel. It is however a simple (and sometimes effective) way of getting rid of a ground loop, by lifting Pin-1 on an XLR cable.
No switches, no transformers, simply an XLR-XLR barrel with Pin-1 dealt with inside the connector.
