SD card, Micro SD and the larger Compact Flash (CF) media are all popular ways to record on either portable or rackmount devices. The explosion in popularity of DSLR movie making has helped portable recorders by Zoom, Roland and Tascam become almost household names. Many models have in-built microphones, with the more sophisticated versions also having additional line or external microphone inputs. Some of the higher end solid-state recorders have no option for on-board microphones, relying purely on the signals you feed into them - either a stereo signal or multitrack.
